Product Description

“Comfort and convenience of upright geometry with the swift efficiency of a road bike“ The Insight series fits into the Performance Hybrid category. Taking the best from both the mountain and road worlds, The Performance Hybrid combines their elements to create the ultimate machine. Larger-diameter 700c wheels offer an efficient platform for this nimble, lightweight bike that’s suitable for commuting, training or simply a weekend ride. Our Insight series also embraces performance factors valued by today’s training racers and charity riders. The 2013 Insight 2 performance is aimed to please those who commute, train exercise, or are simply looking for a smooth riding bike to recreate on. The jewel of the bike is the Insight 6061-T6 Butted Aluminum Performance Hybrid frame with a formed/hooded top tube, an integrated headtube, and vertically compliant stays (VCS). Fit specifically for the frame is an Insight Integrated Alloy aero straight blade fork keeping your ride smooth, stable and precise. Shimano provides a blend of quality components including cranks, bottom bracket, brake levers, 8spd shifters, cassette and derailleurs. Equation R23 Doublewall rims provide a solid structured wheel capable of all day rides. Alloy linear pull brakes afford a fair amount of stopping power sure to keep you out of harm’s way. The rest of the cockpit is proprietary Diamondback alloy with an oversized 31.8mm handlebar and 3D Forged 7° stem to give the appropriate rise for maximum steering control and comfort. A DB Performance Hybrid saddle with gel sits atop a 27.2mm alloy micro adjust seat post offering an exceptionally comfortable ride whether that be in your next cause ride or simply around the block. The Diamondback Insight 2 comes in five sizes: SM (15"), M (17"), LG (19"), XL (21"), XXL (23"). If you are looking for a performance hybrid for commuting, training or simply a weekend ride … look no further.

5Perfect Hybrid = More Road + Less Mountain
By M. D. Crafts
(Note: Review based on my 2012 Insight 2...2013 is same specs & components, different color.)

For the past 7 years, I've primarily used my mountain bike for road use...slowly upgrading with Vuelta wheels, narrower tires, etc. Every time I seriously considered making the jump to a hybrid; I came away unimpressed with just how little they differed from mountain bikes. Most firms seemed to simply take their cheap, old-school mountain bike frames (steel or aluminum)...add either a useless suspension fork or solid steel fork...and toss on 700c rims. Result being heavy bikes with cheap components and poor geometry. (Summary: Most hybrids tend to be basically cheap, heavy mountain bikes with larger wheels.)

With the Insight line, Diamondback has taken their hybrids a major step forward towards road-bike technology. With the hydroformed frame and revised geometry, all that really remains of mountain bike roots are the shifters/derailers/brakes and the upright handlebars. Frame, wheels, geometry, aero forks...all more road-based. Results is similar weight/technology to entry-level road bikes (which start at $800+), but in the pricing range of mountain bikes (approx half).

PROS:
- Hydroformed aluminum frame (optimized for better stiffness/weight than straight tubes).
- Hydroformed aero fork (upgraded to aluminum on Insight 2 models).
- Shimano shifters/derailers.
- Name-brand supporting components: Tektro brakes, Avenir ergo grips, etc.
- Weight lower than a more 'conventional' hybrid (although still a bit heavier than a pure entry-level road bike).

CONS:
- For the price, I've honestly found none after 2-months and 500+ miles of use (work commute of 20-miles/day).

Like most things, the sweet spot is this mid-level model: Insight 2. The Insight 1 keeps the same frame, but cuts price with steel fork and bottom-line Shimano rear-derailer...while Insight 3 has a significant price jump for only minor component improvements. If you're looking for bang-for-the-buck, definitely go with the Insight 2!!!
